Axed from the ODI squad due to lack of fitness and form, Yuvraj Singh is ready to make a Test comeback, when India selectors meet to choose the squad for the Lanka series on Saturday.
The selectors will meet in Chennai to select the Indian team for the three-match series in Sri Lanka.
“Yuvraj is almost a certainty tomorrow, more so especially after (captain Mahendra Singh) Dhoni made it clear how much he standards Yuvraj’s presence in the side,” a Board foundation said.
Before leaving for the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka, Dhoni was demonstrative in his praise for Yuvraj, predicting the left-hander would soon come back to International cricket.
“The kind of capacity Yuvraj is, I do not think it will be hard for him to come back in the side,” Dhoni had said.
“I am just eager that he will be back as soon as possible. I am a big fan of Yuvraj Singh. It is a delight to have him in the side.
“He is one of the best batsmen in the world. He can bat at number four. He is class of a batsman who can actually cash in on. He can play both the ways ? aggressive cricket and also play good defensive cricket. I do not think it is not easy for him to come back,” the India captain gushed.
Yuvraj’s last Test match was next to Bangladesh in January this year even though a ligament injury did not permit him to bat in the match.
Apart from Yuvraj’s addition, the Kris Srikkanth-led panel is likely to retain more or less the similar squad that played against South Africa earlier this year.
“See, the squad is more or less settled. Sachin Tendulkar is existing, while Virender Sehwag is also likely to get better from his injury,” the source said.
Pacer Ishant Sharma, who played in the Test series against South Africa, is also likely to hold his place, while leg-spinner Amit Mishra is set to be persisted with.
Shahid Afridi, the Pakistan captain, has said that he required former captain Younis Khan in the team for the tour of England but different issues, such as form and obedience, had not permitted the cricket bats man’s selection.
“I required Younis to be in the team but, moreover the issue of his recent form, there was also a bit of a disciplinary concern with Younis,” Afridi told Geo TV. “One must understand I don’t pick the team alone. The input of the coach and selectors is also involved in this course of action.”
Younis, whose ban had been upturned by the PCB after an appeal, was not included in Pakistan’s Test or Twenty20 squad for the trip to England. The squads were announced by the board after a conference attended by chairman of selectors Mohsin Khan, coach Waqar Younis, executive Yawar Saeed and Afridi in Dambulla for the duration of the Asia Cup. Cricinfo learned that the left over selectors in Pakistan were not involved or consulted at all in the choices.
Afridi also said that fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, who made a return in the Asia Cup, would only play limited-over cricket for now. “We don’t want to throw away him or injure his enduring career by playing him in Test cricket,” Afridi said.
Even though Pakistan made an early exit from the Asia Cup, after whipping only Bangladesh, they competed hard against Sri Lanka and India. Afridi’s performances were remarkable in the tournament: he scored centuries against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and took three wickets at an economy-rate of 4.60. “The fact is that in the Twenty20 World Cup, I had taken the stress of captaincy which affected my individual form as well, but this time I focused on my individual performances,” he said.
Afridi will make a come back to Test cricket after four years when he leads the team in Pakistan’s ‘home’ series next to Australia in England this summer.

Sri Lanka, who won the previous two editions of the region’s top one-day trophy, in 2006 and 2008, are cheerful after beating India by seven wickets in a league match on Tuesday. The prospect of winning a major one-day title in front of passionate home fans excited..
“A final is a final,” Sangakkara told the media on Wednesday. “Winning an Asia Cup particularly at home would be a special thing.
“It’s going to really motivate us and we are going to hit the ground in a row and really try and win it.” Sri Lanka and India qualified for the final after defeating Pakistan and Bangladesh, Asia’s other two Test nations, in the preliminary league.
Sangakkara said Tuesday’s triumph over India — which came lacking star bowlers Muttiah Muralitharan, Lasith Malinga and Nuwan Kulasekera, who were all rested — boosted his team’s morale.
“We are up for the test,” he said. “We feel good about the final.”
Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni supposed his team was not under pressure after that defeat, but hoped for more steadiness from the bowlers to ease pressure on the batsmen.
“As a cricketer you see it as just one more game,” Dhoni said.
“There is no point thinking of it as a final. We are playing against Sri Lanka, that’s it.
“I think the bowlers have done graciously for us in patches. But it will be really good to win a few games where you put 240 or 260 on the board and win.
“You can’t all the time anticipate your batsmen to score 280 or more and build you win the game.
“It will be good if we be capable of doing that. But then once more our strength has been batting. We are a side that relies more on our batting than our bowling.”
India will miss destructive opener Virender Sehwag, who was ruled out of Tuesday’s match and the final due to a hamstring injury sustained against Pakistan last week.
